How to Create a Simple Poem

Editor Photo Editor Photo

“Life is like eating artichokes, you have got to go through so much to get so little.”
Thomas Aloysius Dorgan.

[1] Computers help you to create a simple poem.
Sit at the computer or use pen and paper to create your literary masterpiece of a simple poem. Relax your mind and know you can begin any task with the willingness to do it. Writing a poem is accepting the idea that you can be creative with words.
…ok…sounds simple…let’s see…relax…relax… breathe slowly… we can be creative with words…accept this idea…think positive…be willing…you want this…I know you do. Let’s go!

[2] Nature is a good subject for a simple poem.
Think of a subject that would be a good topic for poetry. It can be an animal, plant life or a feeling. Once you have your title, you expand from there to let the ideas flow to express something about that subject.
Well… plant life sounds good. After all art[e]choke is our subject here, so yes ARTICHOKE would be a good starting point.  Let’s do some brainstorming: artichoke, green, plant, food, heart, love, life, eat, art, choke, like, look, me, you, all, write, poem, flower, blue, purple, think, positive, think, more, artist, self, what the h#%^ am I doing? ??

[3]Counting syllables can help you create a poem.
Count the syllables in your sentence. The poem will flow better if there are equal syllables in each line of your poem. This is a beginning to getting the feel of poetry. As time goes on, you can change things around as you wish. Your personal style will develop as you let your creativity loose.
One, two, three,1,2,3, one, two, three,1,2,3 syllables, three, two, one, 2, 3,1, one two, three syllables etc etc.

[4]Search the Internet for a rhyming dictionary to create a poem.
Rhyme the last word in each sentence with the previous last word in the sentence above that one. There are rhyming dictionaries on the computer that allow you to type in a word and get a corresponding rhyming word so you don’t have to think of one. Rhymezone.com is a great resource for rhyming words.
Art rhymes with tart, rhymes with fart, rhymes with heart. Start! Choke rhymes with joke, rhymes with poke, rhymes with stroke. Provoke! Love rhymes with glove, rhymes with dove, rhymes with shove. Promove! Start! Provoke! Promove! Artichoke! Love it!

[5]Describe your subject with well chosen adjectives.
The content of the simple poem will have better meaning if you create imagery with adjectives.
Okay …imagery sounds good…after all we are artists…

[6]Look at your finished poem, say it aloud and correct it where it needs to be adjusted.
