Looking North

Summer is here! Summer is here!

Heat … What Heat ? Hot, Hot, Hot ….

Together with the summer, heat arrives in Cyprus, and for the most part of the day, it is desirable to in me shade, seated in the cool, and truly doing nothing. But truly in the heat of the day one must do something! So it is necessary to create the new edition of Art[e]choke, and write articles about art.! Nonetheless before doing so one should freshen up a little, take a cold shower, relax with ice cream, or even think of northern countries … Yes, it is a glorious idea!

In these intolerable times of heat, in this art[e]choke, we shall turn our sights towards to the north, where it is cooler , and the need to plunge into a dreamlike siesta is non-existent. Going North from Cyprus there is the rest of Europe with its unique culture. We shall pass through European Museums, we shall glance at modern galleries, learn the latest news about the European artworld, and finally we will eavesdrop on creative ideas. This will lead us to reflect on some fresh thinking.

In the North the approaches to modern art are varied… In earlier years each country had an inimitable cultural world, but in the XXI century art has become universal. Throughout the last centuries artists followed the traditions accepted in regions. Art was truly regional. Now it follows humanitarian ideas soaring in an air of the present. Art has adopted uniform space and a uniform international language of mankind. Thus to talk about it has a universal simplicity.

So, today we looktowards the North – to Russia, Holland, Germany, … We enquire as to what is new in the art of these countries? What was interesting in the past? Should we focus our experiences in the past or on new creations or is it the case that some modern art will go absolutely unknown? Each artist will answer these questions in their own way, each lover of art will find their own path, but all paths will focus on The Temple of Art.

However on traveling The North we will not move away too far from Cyprus. Having wandered into the distance, we will return to the island, as Cypriot art still remains a priority for us.
